How To Do Keyword Research

All of us have looked for something in the Internet through the search engines and obtained the results we needed.  But have you ever wondered how it works not on the side of the researcher but on the side of webmasters?  It’s the same thing – it all depends on the words typed in the search box, or in short, the keywords.

Having a website having an in-demand topic or product is not enough.  Your website must also find its way to people who constantly search for those products.  That’s where keyword research takes place.  This is one crucial step, as being able to find the right keyword may mean the success or failure of your website, as this is where you can predict what products or topics are in demand, alter whenever possible, and in turn produce the right products or services that people are actively looking out for. So how do we do it exactly?

First of all, you must understand that you must not only numbers and views count, but also the quality of the visitors who go on your page.  You must know what keywords they searched in order to land on your website.  There are webmaster and keyword research tools that can help you know which keywords land in the most traffic and how much a keyword is worth.  Knowing these can help you tailor your site content to be relevant to those needed terms.  Once you pointed out the keywords, compare it to your site content.  Is your content relevant to the searched keywords?

Now, test the keywords.  Do a search.  Find if there are advertisements on the top right hand side of the results.  The more the search ads, the higher the value of the keyword is.  This way you’ll know if you’re on the right track.  Another way to know if the keyword works is by buying ads from Google AdWords just to test how the keyword is getting traffic.  Track the impressions as well as conversion rate over at least 200 or 300 clicks.  With this data, you can now calculate the possible profit that the keyword will bring you.  Say, your ad generated 100 visitors, 5 of which became your customers for a total profit of $500, then it can be assumed that a single visitor from that specific keyword would be worth $5 to your business.  This data can be further utilized to find the click-through rate.  The higher this rate, the higher profit you can expect.

Now that you know the right keyword, find the long tail of search.  This means you also have to find the usual unique searches that people type in to find a certain type of product.  These must be found, as these most likely convert to sales, since if people get specific enough about a certain product, it will only mean they’re highly interested in it.

Add this long tail of search keywords in your tags to be able to rank higher in the search result pages.  You should monitor this to find the search demand curve from where you’ll analyze the other keywords meant for your other products, posts, and services.

And that is only for a single keyword or group of keywords, you have to do the same for the other keywords.  So you see, that’s how successful online marketers do their thing, but it definitely requires time.  So why not start now.  Find your keyword and make the most out of it.
